Welcome to a bit of a geeky post… namely the comparison of the nikon 105mm VR and the canon 100L IS macro lenses…
First off here’s a photo of them both side by side…
Both about the same size, weight and feel. The nikon has the slight edge in focus speed, but, is less configuable in terms of focus limits of distance. (The canon lets you set a limit of 0.3-0.5m in addition to FULL and 0.5-inifity)
Looking at the results below – both are plenty sharp at f/4 (one stop down).
Of course the canon has the 21mpx image and the d3s has the 12mpx image, so it will be interesting to see how the nikon holds up when the 36 megapixel Nikon D800 or D800E comes to blandford studios in March.
See you all soon!
Which do you like more? 🙂
I’ve got a lot of experience with the canon and it has special hybrid IS to be better at macro distances… need more time with the 105VR – but – it looks great so far.. look forward to trying it out at thursdays wedding 🙂
Don’t think you can go wrong with either depending on whether you’re canon or nikon mounted
though the nikon 60mm macro isn’t bad either, might try a zeiss 100/2 makro 🙂
Doesn’t it depend much more on the quality of the photographer ?
After all you could be a pretty poor photographer and both of those cameras and lenses could be wasted in your hands……..
agreed with these lenses the quality of the photographer and the setup of the shot is far more critical – both these lenses are more than suitable for professional results
I can’t comment on the Nikon lens, but the Canon is a beautiful lens to use. I normally shoot in fully manual with the lens switched to MF, but haven’t noticed any problems with A/F when I do use. Although I own a couple of 5D Mk II’s and the A/F system isn’t the greatest in the world.
I recently started using this lens for shooting portraits, after so many have commented on how good it is for this purpose, and I love the results. 🙂
