Sigma 35mm f/1.4 ART lens on Sony A7 cameras with the MC-11 Adapter for Food and Drink Photography

This last year I’ve been very busy photographing for Food and Drink Magazine across many counties in the UK. I have photographed Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Sussex, Surrey and Essex. For this I have used a variety of cameras. 99% of these have been my Sony Alpha a6300, A7S, A7-II and A7R-II. I’ve been using the Sigma MC-11 EF-E mount adapter with the Sigma 18-35/1.8 Art and Sigma 35/1.4 Art lenses using the adapter. I’ve been super impressed and loved using both the lenses and the adapter on the Sony cameras. I’ve made many videos using them (see my youtube channel).

I have a good feeling for these 2 lenses having shot over 40,000 frames using these combinations which gives me a great insight into what to expect. I’ve also used them for other commercial photography and portrait and weddings. However I thought I’d narrow down the scope of the photos I shared here to be just for food and drink and also all shot wide open at f/1.4 with the Sigma 35/1.4 ART lens.

Sigma 35mm ART AF and handling

The Sigma 35mm ART lens has superb handling, Autofocus is silent and fast and also really super accurate on the Sony cameras using the MC-11 adapter. I also love how all the face and eye-detect features still work when using the MC-11 adapter as it means it’s great for doing headshots and environmental portraiture too! The focus ring is large and has a great feel to it. In many ways this is easier than some native Sony E mount lenses which are all focus by wire. So if you do little video clips of just appreciate a more tactile feel then the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 ART lens makes a great combination for you Sony camera. I’ve also used this lens on the APS-C sized a6300 where it also performs great.

Another must have lens for the Sony A6300 is the stellar Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Contemporary lens.

I’d certainly recommend this lens to anyone looking for a high quality 35mm lens for their sony camera which full AF functionality retained and the MC-11 EF to E mount adapter gives you even more lens options ( see my video on canon lenses compatibility – this is now even better with new firmware – see upcoming test.. ).
