GH4 Review – 4K Photomode – 8MPx stills from video
You’ve probably heard all the fuss about 4K video and the ability to pull stills from the footage. Well are they any good? Are they sharp? or blurry? This is what I wanted to find out. Panasonic also added a 4K Photomode in a recent firmware update.
GH4 Method
I pulled the stills out from the video by picking frames and exporting from adobe premiere, these have not been changed after that. The same with the JPG frame below.
Below are versions from various modes, both stills JPGs and then 4K video both with and without the Cinema Photo 4K mode enabled in the menu (both file sizes).

Panasonic GH4 conclusions
So I’ve looked at everything 100% and also reduced size on my screen. My conclusions are that the stills look the same as the stills pulled from the video.. this is amazing news! Of course it may be that there are other situations where this isn’t the case, so next time I’m going to try some inside shots and see if there is any difference in that situation.
I look forward to your thoughts and comments.
You can buy your gh4 from amazon UK.
It’s all about shutter speed. 1/50th of a second video shutter gives you smooth video but blurred stills if camera or subject are moving.
Agreed Mako – these were shot with higher shutter speeds so may suffer from some choppiness to the trained eye but frame grabs will be better.
